Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington is expanding to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., to give the Kentucky practice a bigger foothold in New York.
The Lexington veterinary practice is buying Saratoga Equine Veterinary Service, owned by Dr. Bill and Diana Barnes. Saratoga Equine will operate as a division of Rood and Riddle. Barnes will continue his practice in the Saratoga Springs area as an independent contractor.
"This is an exciting and unique opportunity for our practice, and we look forward to providing outstanding care to the horses in New York and surrounding areas," said veterinarian Bill Rood, the CEO and president of Rood and Riddle.
Saratoga Equine has a surgical and diagnostic center, provides emergency and ambulatory care, and supports referring vets.
Details of the acquisition were not released.
According to a news release from Rood and Riddle, Saratoga Equine will build on the practice's expanded New York presence. Last year, Dr. Scott Ahlschwede, a shareholder vet with Rood and Riddle, began providing ambulatory vet services to the practice's New York clients.
With the advent of slots at Aqueduct, New York racing has attracted racing and breeding operations with higher purses and breeder incentives.
"The strength of New York racing and the increasing number of our clients opening New York divisions of their operations and the expansion of training in the Saratoga area makes this a logical move for Rood and Riddle to provide the services and leverage their expertise that has been the backbone of the Lexington operation," according to the news release.
