Medical emergency causes backhoe driver to crash into a Lexington restaurant, police say

A person hit a light pole, approximately four vehicles and a restaurant on Russell Cave Road while operating a backhoe on Thursday, according to Lexington police.

The accident happened at approximately not long after noon at El Huarache on Russell Cave Road near New Circle Road. Lt. Daniel Truex with the Lexington Police Department said the driver of the backhoe reportedly had a medical emergency while operating the equipment, leading to the collision.

The driver was sent to a hospital for precautionary reasons, according to Truex.

The building and vehicles suffered minor damage, according to Truex. Kentucky Utilities officials were called to the scene to repair the light pole.
