Lexington police warn of telephone scam alert

Lexington police and the Fayette County Sheriff's office are warning citizens of a telephone scam.

According to a news release, a caller posing as a sheriff's deputy claims that the person has a warrant, unpaid fine or a missed grand jury appearance, and should purchase a pre-paid or reloadable money card and then provide the "deputy" with the card number over the phone to settle the fine.

The telephone number used to contact people is fraudulent and the caller is not associated with the Fayette County Sheriff's office.

Neither the Fayette County Sheriff's office nor Lexington police will ask citizens for money over the phone to pay a fine, the release said.

If you are contacted by this scammer, do not send any money. Get as much information about the caller as you can and contact the Fayette County Sheriff's office at (859) 252-1771.
