Substation fire knocks out power to Fayette Mall and 7,500 households

An electrical transmission substation caught fire next to Shillito Park around 4 p.m. Saturday, knocking out power to Fayette Mall and an estimated 7,500 customers along the busy Nicholasville Road corridor for about three hours.

Traffic lights went dark, as did homes in neighborhoods from Rosemont Garden to Man o’ War Boulevard.

KU spokesman Cliff Feltham said power was restored at 6:55 p.m.

Feltham said the Shillito Park outage was unrelated to the fire Saturday at Blue Grass Stockyards near downtown Lexington.
