Churchill Downs, Hallmark to premiere Derby-themed movie set at the racetrack
There’s something new in the air at Churchill Downs this year: a love story.
Churchill Downs and Hallmark media will present “Kentucky Roses,” an original movie shot on location at Churchill Downs, on Derby day. The movie stars Andrew Walker and Odette Annable, whose characters both work at and have family ties to Churchill Downs.
The movie follows two timelines, one present day and one in 1932, at the famed racetrack. Sadie Moore (Annable) works at the Churchill Downs greenhouse, dreaming of becoming a florist who works on the garland of roses given to the Derby winner like her great-grandmother Gloria. While working at Churchill Downs, Sadie meets Ash Taylor (Walker), the son of Churchill Downs’ CEO who is asked to do an emergency repair on the Twin Spires.
“Both Sadie and Ash feel the weight of family legacy and the desire to carve out their own paths. Sparks fly, and their budding romance is complicated by a long-buried connection between their families — a bittersweet love story from the past that threatens to repeat itself,” according to a news release.
“Hallmark Media and Churchill Downs are both legacy brands, each with more than a hundred years of history. Additionally, we share a commitment to giving generations of fans a memorable experience that fosters deep connections,” said Jessica Callahan, Vice President at Hallmark Media. “Together, we’re thrilled to bring audiences an inspiring story of community, courage, and time-honored traditions. “
The movie premieres on the Hallmark Channel 8 p.m. May 2 and will stream the next day on Hallmark+. Additionally, a collection of jewelry inspired by the movie will be available at Hallmark Gold Crown stores.
The Kentucky Derby is set to run at 6:57 p.m. May 2.
