Rock Star Whose Death Broke up the Band, Named No. 1 Drummer of All Time, Would've Turned 78 Today

John Bonham, the legendary drummer for Led Zeppelin, is remembered as one of the most influential musicians in history. When Rolling Stone put together a list of the greatest drummers of all time, they placed him in the number one spot, saying, "On the very first cut of the very first Led Zeppelin LP, John Bonham changed rock drumming forever."

Bonham was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. He died in 1980 at the age of 32 after consuming a large quantity of alcohol and suffering from pulmonary aspiration.

Instead of replacing Bonham, the band decided to break up. At the time, they released a statement that said, "We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect we have for his family, together with the deep sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were."

In a 1972 interview with Bonham, which has been printed by Led Zeppelin News, the drummer spoke about how he originally got into music. "I was 14 years old, I think, something like that, when I was at school," he said. "That was about the beginning of it. Played in a school pantomime. And it just sort of materialized from there, you know. Left school, and we formed small groups and things like that. You know, played locally and everything."

When asked how he came to join Led Zeppelin, he said, "Well, I've known Robert [Plant] for a number of years, because we, you know, were in two groups previously. I was in a group with Robert when we were about 16, weren't we, first of all? We had that group, and then we also got back together only about a year before Zeppelin formed."

"He was my brother," Plant said when speaking about Bonham to Howard Stern in 2017. "He was a loose cannon, but he was a spectacular guy."

Over their 12 years as an active group, Led Zeppelin released countless hit songs that are still popular today, including "Stairway to Heaven," "Whole Lotta Love," and "Dazed and Confused."
