Light of Atlantis Is Turning Water Levels Into the Center of an Entire Puzzle Metroidvania

Metroidvanias usually build themselves around movement abilities, combat upgrades, or exploration tools that gradually open new paths through the world. Light of Atlantis seems interested in something a little different. Instead of focusing on weapons or combat systems, the game places water itself at the center of almost everything.

Developed and published by Duck 'n' Run Games, Light of Atlantis is an upcoming 2D puzzle metroidvania that takes players into the depths of the legendary sunken city. According to its Steam page, the game revolves around controlling water levels and switching between different robots in order to solve ancient puzzles scattered throughout Atlantis.

That premise alone already separates it from many other games associated with the metroidvania label. While exploration remains a major part of the experience, the official description repeatedly emphasizes puzzle solving rather than combat. Atlantis is presented as a place full of mysteries, strange mechanisms, and forgotten challenges waiting to be uncovered.

Water Changes Everything

According to Duck 'n' Run Games, water affects puzzle elements, enemies, characters, and the world itself. Players can interact with robots and levers to change the state of their surroundings, creating new opportunities to progress through Atlantis. The game repeatedly refers to switching between different abilities and perspectives, suggesting that solving puzzles requires understanding how these systems interact with one another.

Additional details shared by the developers describe water and robot switching as the project's two core mechanics. Players move between different robotic bodies that possess unique abilities, using them alongside changing water levels to navigate the ruins and overcome obstacles.

There are plenty of games about Atlantis, but Light of Atlantis seems less interested in mythology and more interested in the ruins themselves. Between shifting water levels, puzzle focused exploration, and a city filled with forgotten machines, the game appears built around understanding how an ancient world once functioned long after its creators disappeared.
