Blockbuster Dystopian Series Officially Headed to Netflix for the First Time

Fans of Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen, and Panem rejoice!

For the first time ever the entire franchise of the blockbuster series The Hunger Gameswill be available to stream on Netflix. All five films, the original four and the story's prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, will be heading to the streamer on July 14th.

This is the first time all of the films will be available to stream in one place and without individual purchase since their removal from HBO Max.

Originally filmed and released over the course of 2011 to 2015, The Hunger Games franchise was a massive success and blockbuster hit generating more than $3 billion at the box office. The prequel, released in 2023, generated more than $348 million at the box office. The films are some of the highest grossing movies of all time.

The franchise has also been critically acclaimed, with the four original films a 70% or higher score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Based on the YA dystopian series by acclaimed author Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games takes place in the fictional Panem in a post-apocalyptic North America. Following an uprising and a rebellion, the country is redefined into different districts by the tyrannical Capitol, who once a year force a young boy and girl from each district to fight to the death in a televised event called "The Hunger Games." When 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen from District 12 enters the games, it sets in motion something the young girl never could have predicted, and changes everything.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, also based on a novel by Collins, tells the story of the 10th Annual Hunger Games from the perspective of a young Coriolanus Snow, who later becomes the main antagonist of the series.

The sixth film in the franchise, Sunrise on the Reaping, will hit theaters this November 20, 2026. Similar to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Sunrise on the Reaping looks back on Haymitch Abernathy, a staple character in the original story who competed in his own games in his youth. No information on streaming for Sunrise on the Reaping is available at this time.
