'Emergency!' Star Randolph Mantooth Dead at 80

Randolph Mantooth, who starred as a firefighter-paramedic in the 1970s NBC action show Emergency!, has died at the age of 80.

His brother, Donald Mantooth, told The Hollywood Reporter that the actor had been "ill for a number of years and kept getting thinner and thinner," ultimately passing away at a hospice facility in Ventura, California.

Emergency! aired for six seasons, beginning in January 1972 and going until May 1977. The show is credited with helping create more paramedic units throughout North America. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there were only 12 units across the continent when the show premiered, but throughout the next three years, 46 states "enacted laws that allowed paramedics to practice emergency medicine."

"Do I respect paramedics? Do I respect firefighters?" Mantooth said in a TV Academy Foundation interview. "There's a debt I owe them that I probably can't ever pay back. But I'm gonna try."

Mantooth was also beloved in the soap opera community, having appeared in General Hospital, Loving, and As the World Turns. He also appeared on Operation Petticoat (1978), Detective School, and The Seekers, as well as guest-starring on Battlestar Galactica, Charlie's Angels, The Fall Guy, Diagnosis Murder, and L.A. Law

Following the news, many paid tribute to the actor on social media.

"Will always be the Squad 51 dude.. calling Rampart. RiP Randolph Mantooth," one person wrote.

"such a great show and great actor!! rip,' another person expressed.

"A little bit of my childhood died with him. "Emergency!" was mandatory TV viewing on Saturday night. I also had the Gage and DeSoto action figures. I also don't think Gage would hide Mitch McConnell's true condition from us," a fan posted.

"Not only one of my favorite actors from a syndicated show that was in heavy rotation when I was kid, but has there ever been a better TV name than Randolph Mantooth?," another fan commented.

"He was my inspiration to become a Paramedic. I was not alone in that. What a loss," one fan said.
