Actor Robert Redford spent time in Kentucky filming ‘The Old Man & The Gun’

Iconic actor Robert Redford, who died Tuesday at age 89, was not from Kentucky — though he did spend time here when filming “The Old Man & The Gun” in 2017.

Redford’s most notable roles include “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Sting” and “All The President’s Men.” He died in his sleep early Tuesday morning at his home in Utah, his publicist said in a statement.

Later in his career, Redford would come to Northern Kentucky to film “The Old Man & The Gun.”

The movie is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker, a lifelong bank robber who in his 70s and after escaping from prison multiple times, isn’t ready to retire from a life of crime and conducts a string of heists. Redford played Tucker, who captures the public’s attention for being charming and never using a gun in his bank robberies.

Parts of the movie were filmed in Northern Kentucky. Scenes were filmed at Lynna’s Grill in Covington and in Newport at Heritage Bank and US Bank, according to the Northern Kentucky Tribune.

Covington residents gathered at Lynna’s Grill to try and spot a glimpse of Redford. He spent most of the time filming inside the restaurant, and onlookers reported seeing Redford’s stand-in outside the restaurant, the Tribune reported.

While most of the movie was filmed in Texas, there were also scenes filmed in Cincinnati, including at The Blue Jay Restaurant, Wichard Oil and The Midway Theater, according to WVXU.

Redford was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for best actor in a motion picture — musical or comedy for his role.
