The journey to the stage of the Metropolitan Opera starts this year on the stage of Lexington’s First Presbyterian Church.

That is the venue Saturday afternoon for the Kentucky District competition in Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, widely considered to be the premiere competition for aspiring opera singers in the United States. The top three competitors Saturday will move on to the Central Region Finals of the Met competition, Nov. 20 in Evanston, Ill.

The University of Kentucky and other area colleges and universities have enjoyed success in the Met competition over the years, sending numerous singers to the regionals and some all the way to the national semifinals and finals on the Metropolitan Opera stage in New York City. The last winner out of UK was baritone Reginald Smith Jr., who was a national finals winner in 2015. But singers in the Kentucky District come from a myriad of locations and institutions around the United States. Here’s a look at who opera fans will hear this weekend.
