Summer music guide: 320+ concerts and events from Railbird to Kentucky State Fair

The song I most readily associate with the onset of summer comes from the collective minds of two of America’s greatest song stylists — Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. It appears early into the saga of “West Side Story” when a pre-infatuated-with-Maria Tony senses a feeling of oncoming but unknown bliss. When I first heard the song as a kid, I couldn’t relate to all the mushy stuff. I just latched into one magical, fanciful lyric and the exuberant melody that gently allowed it to soar.

“Who knows?

There’s something due any day; I will know right away,

Soon as it shows. It may come cannon-balling down through the sky,

Gleam in its eye, bright as a rose.

Who knows?”

Yeah, yeah, yeah. The guy was singing about a girl, as in every other movie musical. But as a clueless kid counting down the days till the school year was kaput, what came cannon-balling out of the sky during “Something’s Coming” wasn’t Maria. It was summer. And, folks, it has landed at our doorstep.

Fittingly, summer doesn’t have that usual gleam in its eye without music. To underscore that thought, we have gathered a mountain of listings for roughly 320 concert events running from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day (not the exact calendar parameters of the season, but the ones most recognized.)

They are now before you in the form of our annual Summer Music Guide.

The selections suit most any musical preference and pocketbook. For instance, two fine May selections are free — jazz saxophonist Melissa Aldana playing for Music for Mission and the Origins Jazz Series this weekend, and rock journeyman Chuck Prophet, this month’s headliner for WFPK’s Waterfront Wednesday concert in Louisville.

Others are truly designed for price-is-no-object budgets. Among the latter, a two-day Cabana ticket for next weekend’s Railbird festival at The Red Mile. It comes with an onslaught of amenities — admission and a cabana suite for 30, elevated stage views, overhead fans and even a hospitality staff. The cost? $60,000.

There are luxury/VIP options for many of the shows listed here. We have tried, though, to stick to just basic prices here minus the accoutrements. Most of them are already pricey enough.

That leads to a distinction to this year’s guide. You’ll notice many of the shows boast odd, unrounded ticket prices - $28.11, $84.83, $149.38 and my personal favorite, a July concert by Vince Gill at Louisville’s Kentucky Center for the Arts with top tier price of $105.01. Every cent, one supposes, matters.

The reason for this is many online ticketing services are now employing something called “all-in pricing.” That means the prices advertised now include all fees and taxes that have previously been added on top of the initial price. But that doesn’t include sales tax, since that varies from state-to-state. In other words, some of the prices for “all-in” are still hanging out.

Outside of budgetary concerns, make sure to check with any venue, online or on the phone, if one of your selected shows requires a road trip, especially if it falls latter in the season. Tour schedules shift and concerts will almost certainly be added, cancelled and rescheduled over the next three months and change.

With that, let the listings of the Summer Music Guide color your summer with fantastic sounds. Maybe even some bright as a rose.

Who knows?
