Summer music guide: 270+ live concerts, events from Railbird to Kentucky State Fair

A milestone just slipped past us, one that fully enshrines the notion of summer music being timeless.

Specifically, “Pet Sounds,” Brian Wilson’s watershed album with the Beach Boys, turned 60 years old last weekend. In gathering information on the 270-plus concerts that make up this year’s Summer Music Guide, I had the record playing on repeat. From the sunny innocence that welcomes us the party on “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” to the gorgeous melancholy of “Caroline, No” that ends the record’s with one of pop music most classically beautiful (but profoundly bittersweet) fades, “Pet Sounds” served as a talisman of sorts as the guide was assembled.

The point of this brief nostalgic turn — at least, personally — is to show just how potent the combination of the summer season and the music surrounding it can be.

“Pet Sounds” has a running of just 36 golden minutes. The concerts corralled for the guide this year will take us from this weekend’s unofficial seasonal inauguration to its equally accepted, but calendar-challenged finish on Labor Day. Like summer itself, the music the guide offers us shifts from sweaty to stormy, from breezy to eerily calm and from hot to, well, hotter.

Things to keep in mind as you peruse the guide. We’re covering over three months’ worth of shows here, so changes, additions and cancellations are a given. The guide covers performances within a two-hour drive of Lexington, so if you’re hitting the road for one of the more distant concerts, check with the venue or its website to make everything is still a go for the act you’re putting out time and money for.

Speaking of the later, some of these shows carry steep price tags. Wherever possible, we excluded ticket prices that carry assorted VIP, Gold Circle and other elaborately titled premium seating options designed to provide a sense of prestige to offset the fact that a front row seat could easily set you back several hundreds of dollars. How very un-summerlike. We stuck with the basic prices for the most part. They’re expensive enough.

Of course, if the high price tag affixed to a favorite show looks to carve too big a hole in your budget, keep in mind that a new copy of “Pet Sounds” without all the extras, alternate takes and what-not runs between $14 and $20. Either way, the sounds of summer are waiting to be picked up. The rest is up to you.
