Best Bets: UK Symphony and CKYO competition winners

Concerto competitions for Lexington’s two leading student orchestras, the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra and Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras, give musicians the chance to step in front of their orchestras and play some of the greatest material written for their instruments. It does not always happen this way, but both groups present their winners this weekend.

The UK Symphony, featuring competition winner Christine Sallas, oboe, and runner-up Caden Holmes, trumpet, plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Also on the program at the Singletary Center for the Arts, 405 Rose Street, is music from Star Wars and Gustav Holst’s The Planets.

The CKYO winners — Amy Wang, piano; Kate Brown, oboe; and Skye Park, violin — perform at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Singletary Center in a concert featuring the Symphony and Repertory Orchestras. It is part of CKYO’s Teen Arts Festival, with performances at 1:30, 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. One ticket is good for admission to all performances. Call 859-257-4929 or visit Ckyo.org.

‘In the Red and Brown Water’

The UK Department of Theatre and Dance presents Tarell Alvin McCraney’s first play in a trilogy called The Brother/Sister Plays.

A young woman named Oya is forced to make life-altering choices. Should she accept a track scholarship or stay in the Louisiana projects to care for her dying mother?

Kathleen Madigan

The veteran comedian, who has starred in specials on Neflix, HBO and Comedy Central, performs at Comedy Off Broadway at The Mall at Lexington Green. Show times are

One World Film Festival: ‘Today’s Special’
