Gypsy Rose Blanchard Shares What Nick Godejohn Said Before Killing Her Mom
Gypsy Rose Blanchard is reflecting on what ex-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn said before killing her mother, Claudine "Dee Dee" Blanchard, in 2015.
"She had asked, ‘Who are you,'" Gypsy, 34, recalled during the "We Need to Talk" podcast episode released on Tuesday, June 9, detailing the night of her mom's murder. "He responded, ‘I am death.'"
Gypsy noted that her version of events has been corroborated by court transcripts and Godejohn's conversations with his fellow inmates.
"I remember her calling out for my name," she continued. "I felt like I wanted to go and help her, but I was terrified at the same time. Like my body was paralyzed. I couldn't move."
Gypsy said she was "so focused on trying to breathe" and "block" out what was actually happening. During the episode, Gypsy recalled hearing "screaming" coming from her mom.
"It was a horrible sound. It was screaming," she added. "It was shock."
Gypsy said she hid in the bathroom and went into the "fetal position" while Godejohn was in the house.
"I just remember one sharp scream and then nothing after that," she added. "Then I realized it was over."
Gypsy met Godejohn, 37, online before they formed a close-knit relationship, which eventually turned into a romance. She helped him plan the 2015 crime after years of alleged abuse by her mother, who was believed to have the psychological disorder known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy, where caregivers exaggerate or fabricate health issues for sympathy and attention. Dee Dee was 48 when she was stabbed to death by Godejohn.
Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and in 2016 was sentenced to 10 years in prison. She was released in December 2023. Godejohn, meanwhile, admitted to killing Dee Dee and was convicted of first-degree murder in 2018. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
After the murder, Gypsy said she was "in a state of shock" over what happened. She recalled waiting for Godejohn while "completely naked" in the bathroom.
Gypsy explained that Godejohn's alleged "fantasy" was to assault Dee Dee before killing her. "I felt like that was too far," Gypsy said, noting that she "agreed" to let him sexually assault her instead.
"I guess I agreed to something I didn't fully understand, and that's all I'll say about that," she continued. "What's even more horrible is I had to testify in court and I had to - I'm going to be open and honest - I had to, basically, say he didn't rape me because he got me to agree to it."
A message shared via the podcast's producers noted that Godejohn has "disputed" Gypsy's allegations regarding the encounter.
