Georgetown’s Thoroughbred AcresModern farmhouse with room to spare.
When a job change brought Larry and Mariann Rogers to the Kentucky Bluegrass region from New Jersey in 2012, they had some specific requirements in mind for their new home.
First and foremost the empty nesters wanted plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms for visiting family, so children and grandchildren would feel welcome and comfortable.
“We were looking for a larger place with four or five bedrooms and we liked the ensuites upstairs,” Larry said. “Guests can have their privacy, and it’s not like everyone has to share a hall bath.”
Larry and Mariann were also ready to get away from driving hassles, after years of dealing with Trenton, New Jersey traffic.
With five bedrooms and five baths, the 4,384 square foot home they found at 171 Coachman Place in Georgetown’s Thoroughbred Acres subdivision more than met their space requirements. And it’s an easy commute to Larry’s job in Lexington from Georgetown.
Most of their shopping is only six minutes away. “We’re very accessible to Walmart, grocery stores, Lowe’s and Kohl’s,” Mariann said, adding that I-75 is also closeby.
The home has a welcoming and commanding presence on its corner of Thoroughbred Estates which tends to draw positive comments from visitors and passers-by. They refer to the style of their home as a “modern farmhouse,” and that’s a good fit with the three covered porches – front, back and side – and the wide expanse of farmland just beyond their back yard.
They are regularly treated to spectacular sunsets they catch from their living room and from the back porch. “The gorgeous sunsets are one of the many things we love about it here,” Mariann said. “We also get a great view of the Georgetown fireworks on Fourth of July.”
As you enter the two-story foyer you’re met with expanses of white oak flooring extending in all directions and bathed in sunlight from a generous array of windows. An L-shaped staircase leads to the upstairs bedrooms.
To the left, a sitting room has become Mariann’s sewing room which can be closed off with a large sliding barn door that Larry crafted. There are fine examples of wainscoting, door trim, and crown molding throughout.
“I just like the appearance of the house,” Larry said, calling attention to the transoms above the doors and how three layers of molding fit together to elevate the home to the next level.
To the right of the entry, you pass by the formal dining room and into the open concept living area with a fieldstone fireplace fueled by propane.
The kitchen features white cabinets accentuated with glazing and set above black granite countertops.
“We’ve made a lot of cookies with the grandkids on this island,” Larry said. “I like that there’s plenty of room around the island for two people to walk without things being too tight.”
Upstairs the master suite features include a tray ceiling, a Tuscan inspired luxury tub, extra-large shower, and his and hers vanities. Three more bedrooms round out the upstairs, one with an ensuite bath, and the other two share a Jack and Jill bath arrangement.
The walkout basement sports a large family room and an ensuite bedroom with natural light and full bath. Larry utilized the downstairs bedroom as a study.
After living on three levels, the Rogers are ready for single floor ranch living at this phase of their lives. “I absolutely love this house,” Larry said. “We really hate to sell it.”
