Police called to Fayette Mall after reported fight, shot fired

Police were called Monday night to the Fayette Mall after a fight led to gunfire in the parking lot, according to police.

Officers were called just after 7 p.m. to a report of a fight outside the P.F. Chang’s restaurant at the mall, police Lt. Nate Muller said. Investigators were able to determine that a group of people around a vehicle in the parking lot had gotten into a fight that eventually moved onto the sidewalk, he said.

Two individuals were involved in a fight over a handgun when a shot was fired, police said. A bystander, an off-duty corrections officer, intervened and secured the firearm, police said in a statement.

One of two people who were detained by police after the fight was taken to the hospital with a minor hand injury, but it is unclear if the injury was caused by gunfire, Muller said.

Police said evidence indicates that narcotics are involved. It continues to gather evidence and speak with witnesses.

The Fayette Mall released a statement just before 8 p.m. Monday saying that stores were operating normally and that there was no threat to shoppers.

Charges may be filed as the investigation continues, Muller said.

No other injuries were reported.
