Southland Christian Church has committed to proceed with plans to purchase the Lexington Mall property on Richmond Road.
Chris Hahn, the church's senior executive pastor, said a letter of intent to purchase the property was sent to mall owner Saul Centers on Friday.
The next step in the process is scheduled for Sept. 9, when the Lexington Planning Commission will consider Southland's development plan.
If the plan is approved, Southland would like to close on the purchase Oct. 1, Hahn said.

Southland expects to spend about $30 million buying and redeveloping the 30-acre site, which is planned as one of five satellites to the church's Harrodsburg Road location.
The church wants to tear down the one-story part of the mall and build a 2,800-seat worship center in its place. The old Dillard's store would be renovated for church offices and ancillary services.
