Lexington man dies as a result of Sunday crash

A Lexington man whose car was hit by a police cruiser on Sunday has died.

John C. Chew, 70, was declared dead of a traumatic brain injury at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Fayette County Coroner's Office.

Chew was not wearing a seat belt when he drove his 1989 Mercury Sable east on Manchester Street and through a red light at Oliver Lewis Way, the new Newtown Pike extension road that opened Sept. 1.

A 2007 Crown Victoria police cruiser driven by Officer Kevin G. Jones, 43, struck the Sable on the passenger side. The accident occurred about 1 p.m. Sunday.

Drugs and alcohol were not suspected in the crash, Lt. Chris Van Brackel said. But he said police would be investigating whether the newness of the intersection had anything to do with the crash.

Jones was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He was off duty because of neck injuries.

It is department policy for officers to wear seat belts. Any disciplinary action against Jones would be up to the chain of command, Van Brackel said.
