PIKEVILLE — Pikeville Medical Center has become affiliated with Cleveland Clinic's heart surgery center, officials announced Wednesday.
The affiliation will allow the centers to share surgical data and research and will allow the Pikeville hospital to use new techniques and training offered by Cleveland Clinic.
Pikeville Medical Center performed its first open heart surgery 12 years ago, officials said.
"They will supervise our heart program; our doctors will be credentialed at Cleveland Clinic," said Pikeville Medical Center CEO Walter May. "Any additional training will be done there ... We will adopt the Cleveland Clinic protocols and mirror what they do.
"We know they are the best; we want to be the best in our region," May said.
Cleveland Clinic has been expanding its brand globally, May said, and is near opening a clinic in Abu Dhabi.
