Bourbon & Bars

Fans’ demands heard: A rare Buffalo Trace bourbon is finally coming to the U.S.

What could be better than Blanton’s? How about Blanton’s Gold?

Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort announced Thursday that the Gold Edition of Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon, previously unavailable in the United States, will hit the U.S. market this summer.

The Gold edition is the same recipe as Blanton’s Original, but it’s a higher proof, 103 vs. 93.

And the horse and jockey topper on each bottle will be gold, and feature different letters that spell out “BLANTONS.”

But getting a complete set of eight will be extra tricky. And expensive.

The Gold edition will be available “on a very limited basis for a suggested retail price of $120,” according to the news release.

Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort announced plans on Thursday to release Blanton’s Gold edition in the U.S. for the first time ever this summer. It will be a very limited release, with a suggested retail price of $120.

This will be the first time it is available here but Buffalo Trace plans to release it once every year from now on.

“We’ve seen Blanton’s soar in popularity over the last few years, and fans have asked us for the Gold version in the U.S. too,” said Kris Comstock, senior marketing director. “We’re thrilled to fulfill their requests the summer.”

Blanton’s Gold tasting notes

Tasting notes describe Blanton’s Gold as “having a nose marked by honey, heavy rye, dried fruits, vanilla and chocolate. The taste is descirbed full and rich, marked by apricot, butter, pepper, light honey, and oak.” The finish is long “with toffee and apple, developing on pecan and caramel.”

Blanton’s Single Barrel, named after former distillery president Col. Albert B. Blanton, was created in 1984 by the late Elmer T. Lee. It was the world’s first single barrel bourbon, creating a trend that has blossomed into huge business for Kentucky distillers. Blanton’s Gold was the second version created.
