Latest Angel’s Envy special release is first of its kind since 2013. Where to get it.
Fans of Angel’s Envy will know that it’s been a minute since the Louisville-based brand has put out a rye.
It’s actually been almost a decade. But now the small batch finished whiskey company is releasing its first new rye since 2013 as part of the Angel’s Envy Cellar Collection.
Angel’s Envy Rye Whiskey Finished in Ice Cider Casks is a 7-year-old rye, finished for 364 days in casks from Vermont-based Eden Specialty Ciders.
“The flavor profile of this whiskey is very unique — the spiciness of the rye is balanced by the fruity sweetness from the ice cider casks, and there’s a crispness that is really distinct. We’ve never seen a whiskey finished in ice cider casks before, so we’re excited to introduce this finish as part of our Cellar Collection,” said Kyle Henderson, Angel’s Envy’s distillery Production manager, in the news release.
Ice cider is a dessert-style cider made from tart late-season Northern Spy apples, naturally cold-concentrated before partial fermentation and aging, according to the release.
“My brother, Andrew, was the one who found these barrels and raised the idea of an ice cider finish; he’s really championed this project from the beginning. As we tasted samples and learned more about the craftsmanship, time and resources required to create each bottle of ice cider, we fell in love with the product and the process and knew these special casks would be an excellent match for our rye,” Henderson said.
According to the tasting notes, Angel’s Envy Rye Whiskey Finished in Ice Cider Cases is 107 proof, with a nose of caramel candy apple, toasted oak, nuttiness and cinnamon. The palate is bold and peppery with cinnamon notes, vanilla, ripe apple, toffee and butterscotch, with a long finish that transitions from spicy to sweet, with notes of brown sugar and apple.
Where to buy, presale lottery
The limited release of just 6,000 bottles will be available beginning Feb. 25 at select retailers in Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, New York, California, Illinois and Texas. It also will be available at the downtown Louisville distillery.
However, members of the Angel’s Envy 500 Main club can enter a drawing for a chance to buy a bottle before public sale; 500 bottles are reserved for the presale lottery, according to the distillery. Suggested retail price is $249.99.
