Missing Michter’s 10 Year Bourbon? Here’s what to look for from the Kentucky distillery
Louisville-based whiskey maker Michter’s will release only one 10-year-old product this year and it’s coming this month, July.
Michter’s 10 Year Rye, a limited release, is a single-barrel Kentucky-style rye made with a fair amount of corn and barley to balance the spice of the rye, according to a news release.
“This year’s Michter’s 10 Year Rye continues to provide a consistent, rich and complex experience with beautiful spice and citrus surrounded by decadent chocolate, caramel and fruit. It is the exceptional balance of sweet and spice with a subtle hint of oak maturity that makes Michter’s so special to those who appreciate a Kentucky style rye,” said Michter’s master of maturation Andrea Wilson in the release.
The suggested U.S. retail price per 750ml bottle of Michter’s 10 Year Rye is $185.
The Michter’s portfolio includes bourbon, rye, sour mash whiskey and American whiskey, all on allocation because of high demand.
When will Michter’s 10 Year Bourbon be released this year?
And the supply crunch is expected to be worse this year: In March, Michter’s announced that they would hold back the anticipated release of the Michter’s 10 Year Bourbon until 2023 to allow it to have more time to age.
So that makes the summer release of Michter’s 10 Year Rye unique: “It may be the only release we do of a 10 Year whiskey this year, but it’s a really special one,” said Michter’s president Joseph J. Magliocco. “At Michter’s it’s about never compromising on quality rather than maximizing sales.”
Michter’s master distiller Dan McKee said in the release that he is especially happy with the rye. “It’s one of my very favorite releases,” he said.
This isn’t the first time Michter’s has held back a whiskey.
“Over the more than two decades since we restarted Michter’s in Kentucky, we have had several years where we’ve chosen to hold back particular offerings,” Magliocco said in March. “Our goal is to put out the greatest American whiskey. When we think something is already wonderful, but will become spectacular with a bit more aging, we have not been shy about waiting to release it. When it comes to whiskey, there’s no substitute for patience and time.”
In addition to Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery and Michter’s Shively Distillery, both located in Louisville, the company has its 205-acre farm and operations in Springfield, Ky.
