One of bourbon’s biggest annual releases is out. Where can you buy the limited whiskey?
One of the biggest annual releases in the bourbon lover’s calendar is here: Angel’s Envy Cask Strength went on sale Nov. 1 and there are fewer than 17,000 bottles available, according to the distiller.
For the 11th year, the brand released an undiluted version of its Kentucky bourbon finished in port wine barrels and this year’s version is 119.8 proof. The suggested retail price of this year’s Cask Strength is $229.99. It’s available to buy in all 50 states and at the Angel’s Envy distillery in downtown Louisville.
According to the tasting notes, the 2022 version has a nose of leather, brown sugar and caramel, creme brulee and marshmallow with notes of green apple and orange. On the palate, its apples, caramel and brown sugar blend with orange to “give a creamsicle richness,” according to the notes. The finish has light fruitiness, grape tannic notes and spice.
The 2021 edition received a Double Gold from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a Gold from Fred Minnick’s ASCOT Awards and 92 points from the Ultimate Spirits Challenge, according to the news release.
“Our annual Cask Strength expression is our most highly anticipated annual tradition at Angel’s Envy, both for our team and for our fans, and this year’s release is special – not just because it is an exceptional whiskey, but because it also marks an exciting time in Angel’s Envy’s growth,” said Gigi DaDan, general manager of Angel’s Envy, in the news release. “Looking ahead, we can’t wait to see the unique perspective that our new master distiller Owen Martin will bring to the Cask Strength program as he oversees it with the support of our best-in-class production team.”
Martin joined the company in mid-October from from Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey. He will be working at Angel’s Envy newly expanded distillery in downtown Louisville, will lead the production team as the first official master distiller since co-founder and master distiller Lincoln Henderson’s death in 2013.
Angel’s Envy distillery expansion
Meanwhile, the brand, which is now owned by Bacardi, received approval last month for a major expansion in Henry County that was opposed by some in the county, including writer Wendell Berry.
The plan calls for building up to 25 bourbon barrel warehouses, a VIP overnight lodge and cabins, an event space for bourbon tastings and more on 1,200 of farmland.
It’s unclear when work will begin on the project.
