Elevated Kentucky River results in mudslide at Buffalo Trace Distillery
Buffalo Trace Distillery on the Kentucky River in Frankfort was the site of a mudslide on Monday morning.
But so far no bourbon barrel warehouses or production has been impacted, the company said.
“In the early morning hours of Feb. 24, a weather-related mudslide occurred on the northeast side of Buffalo Trace Distillery along the Kentucky River,” the distillery, which is owned by Sazerac, said in a statement.
“Crews are still assessing the situation, however, at this time we know the mudslide resulted in one Conex cargo container and one temporary office falling into the river.”
No team members were near the area at the time of the mudslide and the affected property has been properly roped off to ensure the safety of those at the distillery, the statement said.
“Buffalo Trace Distillery will work closely with professionals to ensure proper cleanup. Production, as well as tours and visitation at the distillery, are not disrupted by the mudslide.”
Last week, the distillery was closed to visitors for a few days, but production was not impacted.
Footage shot by Louisville TV station WLKY showed the bank of the river eroded and collapsing under the pavement next to the Dry House where the distillery treats stillage or spent grains, which are left over after the fermentation and distilling process.
The facility was part of a 2022 expansion that also included a new water treatment plant.
At least one cargo container was visible on the slope leading to the water, which has been at elevated levels since the heavy rains that flooded Kentucky earlier this month.
