If you’ve ever wanted a chance to buy a rare bottle of bourbon at retail price, grab your biggest checkbook and head on over to Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort. Like, right now.
In honor of the 200th birthday of William Larue Weller, the Kentucky distillery announced July 25 that it is releasing two ultra-aged wheat whiskeys immediately.
One will be available in the gift shop while supplies last, as well as the oldest version of Eagle Rare.
The catch? Both are pricey.
In Buffalo Trace Distillery gift shop
Weller Millenium No. 2, the second edition of the special bourbon released for the first time in 2024, will be on the shelves. It’s a newly crafted blend of vintage straight wheated bourbon and wheat whiskeys distilled at Buffalo Trace in 2001, 2003 and 2006 and set aside to create a special tribute to Weller.
The result is a balance of dark cherry, rich butterscotch and warm vanilla over layers of well-aged oak, with a bold and enduring oak-forward finish, according to the tasting notes.
The suggested retail price is $7,500, released in limited quantities in the Kentucky distillery gift shop, as well as through Sazerac’s U.S. and global networks. It’s also available via Legacy de Forge, a new Sazerac-branded global online platform.
“Weller Millenium was crafted to feature some of the first whiskeys distilled in the new millennium amid a period of transformation at Buffalo Trace Distillery. This second edition takes last year’s release a step further, with a new blend that we humbly believe is an improvement over the well-regarded first edition,” said Andrew Duncan, global brand director for Buffalo Trace. “By carefully selecting and blending barrels dating back to the early 2000s, we have revisited a chapter in the Distillery’s history that shaped who we are today.”
Also available in the gift shop, beginning July 25 and while supplies last, is Eagle Rare 25, the oldest expressed released from the Eagle Rare portfolio.
It is the first release from Warehouse P, one of Buffalo Trace’s two experimental warehouses, constructed to test if it was possible to extend the maturation process. It comes in a hand-blown crystal decanter with a sterling silver wing in a custom display box. This 101-proof bourbon is $10,000 in the gift shop.
Special Weller in airports
Buffalo Trace also is releasing a special Weller 18 Year Old, the oldest age-stated version of this bourbon yet. But Kentuckians will have to look for it elsewhere.
“Weller 18 Year Old is the culmination of curiosity, tradition and time,” said Harlen Wheatley, master distiller of Buffalo Trace Distillery. “The softness of the wheat has evolved into something rich and wonderfully expressive. We are extremely proud of the resulting whiskey, which showcases the versatility and potential of a wheat-forward mashbill.”
Weller 18 is 90 proof, with a nose of delicately aged fruits and tobacco, according to the tasting notes. On the palate, it’s a balance of warm baking spices and crisp green pear, with a lasting finish.
It comes packaged in a 700 ml crystal decanter with a crystal topper etched with W.L. Weller’s “W” stamp of quality. For the inaugural phase, it will be available in the global travel retail market in airports including Los Angeles International (LAX), John F. Kennedy International (JFK) in New York and London Heathrow in July at a suggested retail price of $499.
