Here’s what you can find hitting store shelves now.
Buffalo Trace Single Oak Rye Bourbon and Experimental Collection
Buffalo Trace Distillery has releases from two long-running experimental programs, the Single Oak Project and Buffalo Trace Distillery Experimental Collection, coming out in April.
The Frankfort distillery recreated the winning barrel from the Single Oak Project, Barrel #80, from their first experimental program and are making it available as a permanent, continuously released whiskey brand: Single Oak Rye Bourbon. It’s a 375mL bottle, with a suggested retail price of $74.99 at the Buffalo Trace Distillery Gift Shop and nationally.
The Single Oak Project began in 1999, exploring the impact of mashbill, entry proof, aging location and barrel construction, involving 192 unique bourbon barrels, and Barrel 80 was selected as the standout expression in 2011, according to a news release.
According to the tasting notes, it has a delicate nose of caramel and vanilla with light baking spice, toasted oak and orchard fruit. On the palate, it’s toffee, vanilla cream and honey, with seasoned oak and baking spices and a long finish of oak, spice and mellow caramel.
The other release, Low Entry Proof Wheated Bourbon, is the 28th release in the Experimental Collection. It went into the barrel at 105 proof and was bottled at 107 proof. It’s also a 375mL bottle, with a suggested retail price of $34.99, also available in the gift shop and nationally.
According to the tasting notes, it has a nose of caramel and warm brown spice, leather and tobacco. On the palate, it’s oak, earth and dried fig, with a finish of spice, fig and oak.
Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat
Buffalo Trace also released the second experimental Daniel Weller: Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat. Available in limited quantities across the U.S., it has a suggested retail price of $549.99.
It is made with one of the world’s oldest wheat trains to honor Kentucky pioneer Daniel Weller, who settled in the Commonwealth in 1794.
Each 750mL bottle features a compass stopper engraved with the coordinates of Weller’s original Kentucky farm in Botland.
The bourbon is aged 10 years, bottled at 94 proof and, according to the tasting notes, has a biscuit-forward nose with nutty, baked-cookie aromas. On the palate, it’s sweet, dried fruit and baking spice with along finish.
Cooper & Thief x Larceny Napa Valley Red Blend
Cooper & Thief Cellarmasters in California announced a new collaboration with Larceny Bourbon: Cooper & Thief x Larceny Napa Valley Red Blend.
It’s a limited release wine finished in Larceny bourbon barrels.
The result “creates complex whiskey-driven aromas and imparts notes of warm caramel, butterscotch and toasty oak,” according to a news release.
Known for their luxury bourbon barrel-aged wine brand, Cooper & Thief is rolling out the release to select retailers with suggested retail price of $34.99. It’s already received a 93-point score from The Tasting Panel Magazine, according to the news release.
“Larceny Bourbon is crafted with a wheated mashbill that creates a softer, rounder whiskey with notes of caramel, honey, and toasted oak. When those barrels are used to finish a wine like this Napa Valley Red Blend, they bring more than just character— they layer in a rich sweetness, enhance the wine’s texture, and add depth through warm baking spice and subtle vanilla notes,” said Conor O’Driscoll, Master Distiller for Larceny Bourbon. “The interaction between the wine and our barrels creates a long, smooth finish that bridges the worlds of bourbon and wine in a compelling way. It’s a bold, flavorful expression that stays true to Larceny’s spirit of doing things a little differently.”
