If you’ve ever thought “honey and bourbon sound like they’d go together great” but been disappointed by overly sweet honey flavored bourbons, there’s a new option to try.
Green River Distilling Co. has added a new bourbon to its portfolio, Green River Honey Finished Bourbon Whiskey. It’s four-year-old Green River Kentucky Straight Bourbon that has be finished with a custom blend of locally sourced honey, according to the distillery.
The honey comes from Above the Dirt Garden and Honey Shop, a Kentucky Proud beekeeper-owned business that works with a network of family-owned apiaries. The 100% raw unfiltered honey from apiaries in the Midwest and the South is added to the barrel, then aged for an unspecified time, according to a news release.
The honey-finished bourbon is bottled at 92 proof, a higher proof than many honey whiskey options. It’s available nationwide beginning May 15 for a suggested retail price of $24.99 for a 750mL bottle. It also will be available as a 200mL bottle.
According to the tasting notes, Green River Honey Finished Bourbon has a nose of floral aromas, honey, caramel, orange peel, toasted oak and vanilla. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, with a finish of light cinnamon spice.
Green River says the new release works well in cocktails and suggests several, including:
Green River Honey Gold Rush
- 2 ounces of Green River honey
- 3/4-ounce of fresh lemon juice
- Half-ounce of simple syrup
- Shake with ice. Strain over a large cube. Garnish with a lemon wheel if you’re feeling fancy, according to the recipe.
