New KET show explores Kentucky food and where it comes from
A new show on KET celebrates Kentucky food and the local farmers who grow it, from Appalachia to Paducah and in between. “The Farmer & The Foodie” will premier Saturday at 2:30 Eastern on KET.
In the six-episode season, foodie Lindsey McClave and farmer Maggie Keith explore the state’s culinary riches. Keith is a fourth generation farmer who raises grassfed beef in Crestwood just outside of Louisville at Foxhollow Farm. McClave is a Louisville-based food writer and recipe developer.
“Maggie and I became close friends over a decade ago,” McClave said. “She taught me so much about where food comes from and why it matters, why buying local is so important.”
The two did a lot of cooking together and hosted a radio show for about four years. They debuted a pilot episode on KET in 2016 and began working on a season of episodes, funding each as they went along.
The first season was filmed over a year and a half, she said “So you see all four seasons, showcasing farmers in every condition.”
Including one episode filmed in 2-degree cold in Henry county, she said. “You get to see what farming is really all about.”
Other episodes feature the Hindman Settlement School and Berea-based Grow Appalachia; how farmers are fighting food insecurity in Louisville; and how chefs and fishermen are working together on the problem of invasive carp.
They are planning out their second season now, she said.
