Critchfield Meats closing Zandale store, moves up Southland opening

Critchfield Meats is closing its Zandale location earlier than expected to make the move to their new location on Southland Drive.

The store on Nicholasville Road will close Oct. 17, according to owner Mark Critchfield.

The move was expedited after a dispute arose with the Zandale Shopping Center landlord.

He said they expect to open the new location at 398 Southland Dr., in the former Save-A-Lot store, in the first week of November.

The new Critchfield Market will focus on getting ready for the upcoming holidays, he said.

“We will still take all the orders for holiday turkeys and hams,” he said.

Critchfield said that he expects to add the hot bar, and the much-coveted fried chicken, after the holiday crush is over.

“We probably won’t have the chicken up and running until January,” he said.

In August, Critchfield Meats announced that the family-run butcher shop and market would be moving into a larger space but the move was not expected to happen until early 2021.

Mark Critchfield said that he planned to keep all the equipment used to make the popular fried chicken and possibly hire former Save-A-Lot employees back as well.

“The chicken recipe will survive,” he said.

Critchfield’s Meats began with a butcher shop at 1400 North Limestone in 1969 opened by Amos “Butch” Critchfield and mother, Opal. The retail store off Nicholasville Road opened in 1987.
