Sharon Thompson: It's icing on the cake: Show features renowned decorator
Nationally known cake decorator and instructor Sharon Zambito of New Orleans will lead a workshop in Georgetown next month.
Zambito, right, creator of instructional cake-decorating DVDs, will be the featured speaker at the second annual Kentucky Cake Show on May 21 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 110 Grandstand Drive. Zambito, who has appeared twice on The Learning Channel's Ultimate Cake Off, is owner of Sugared Productions (Sugaredproductions.com).
Members of the Kentucky Cake Society have created cakes to be judged by Zambito. The event is open to the public.
Hyatt, Maker's Mark team for dinner
Greg Davis, master distiller for Maker's Mark bourbon, will be at BlueFire Bar & Grill in the Hyatt Regency from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. He will discuss Maker's Mark bourbon on the eve of the Maker's Mark bottle signing and running of the Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland.

Seven Ky. wineries win gold awards
Eleven wines from seven Kentucky wineries earned gold awards at the Kentucky Derby Festival wine competition last month in Louisville.
The gold medal-winning Kentucky wineries and wines are:
■ Chrisman Mill of Nicholasville, vidal blanc.
■ Lovers Leap of Lawrenceburg, cabernet sauvignon.
■ MillaNova of Mount Washington, mafia merlot.
■ Prodigy of Frankfort, chambourcin and vignoles.
■ River Bend or Louisville, meritage.
■ Talon of Lexington, cabernet sauvignon, chambourcin reserve and chambourcin.
■ Wight-Meyer of Shepherdsville, petite syrah and Moores diamond.
The competition included entries from wineries in Kentucky and Indiana. Judges from the American Wine Society scored the entries.
