Bread Box adding farmers market, Four Roses has julep contest

The Bread Box, 501 West Sixth Street, is hosting a farmers market every Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. The market features local fruit, vegetable and flower growers as well as food producers including Rosemont Bakehouse, which offers community-supported bread shares. You can get 12 weeks of bread for $60. Or Alive & Wild, which also offers community-supported fermentation shares, such as kimchi. Other vendors include Bellaire Blooms, Elmwood Stock Farm, FoodChain and A Cup of Common Wealth/Magic Beans Coffee Roasters.

▪  Speaking of farmers markets, Bluegrass Farmers Market returns April 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Liquor Barn at 1837 Plaudit Place and Azur at 3070 Lakecrest Circle. The vendors are Kentucky Proud growers, offering an assortment of seasonal produce and more.

▪  Alfalfa, 141 East Main Street, will feature Spanish cuisine for International Night on April 13. From 5:30 to 9 p.m., you can get Basque cod (cod simmered with onion, potato, tomato, garlic, ham, jalapenos, green olives and spices); pasta olivada (linguine with roasted peppers and kale tossed in a simple olivada of sun dried tomatoes, green olives, capers, lemon, garlic and almonds); vegetarian or chicken, chorizo and shrimp paella; potato tortilla; or escalivada (roasted eggplant, roasted yellow and red peppers, roasted tomato, roasted scallions and roasted potato skins with garlic olive oil drizzle served with crumbled goat cheese, green olive.) ▪  Confused Confections Bakehouse, 113 Clay Avenue, has started doing cake demonstrations on Saturdays. On April 16, you can see how they make a present-shaped cake with a big bow on top or see them make a Mother’s Day cake. Reservations required; call 859-263-0555. ▪ Chrisman Mill Vineyard, 2385 Chrisman Mill Road in Nicholasville, will host a farm to table family style dinner on Earth Day, April 22. Beginning at 6 p.m., enjoy a four-course dinner under the stars, made from locally grown ingredients, and paired with four wines. ▪ Grace Café, 219 South Fourth Street in Danville, the first pay-as-you-can community cafe in Kentucky, is hoping to raise $18,000 so that the café can open its doors seven days a week. Providing service two more days each week will allow the café to serve more than 160 meals more each week, over 8,300 more meals every year, according to the cafe. The cafe is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday for family dinner; and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for brunch on Sunday. For more information, call 859-209-2529.

▪  Four Roses will host fourth annual Lexington Rose Julep recipe contest from 6 to 8 p.m. April 27 at the Grand Reserve, 903 Manchester Street. Eight local bartenders will create their take on the Kentucky Derby’s classic cocktail, the mint julep, and the crowd helps pick the winner. It’s a $5 donation at the door, with proceeds to benefit the Lexington Art League.

▪  Louisville-based Sterling Beer is paying tribute to 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat with the release of a limited edition can, officially licensed by Secretariat’s owner Penny Chenery and the Triple Crown. “Sterling, the Good Luck Brand, and Secretariat remind us of what is great about our heritage and take us to a place where quality and excellence go hand in hand,” said Todd Jackson, president of Sterling Beer who revived the 150-year-old heritage brand in 2012.
