British newspaper hails Kentucky hotel, restaurant as ‘cosy’

Historic Boone Tavern in Berea has been reviewed by the London Telegraph. That’s the London in Great Britain, not Kentucky.

What did the Brits think? The hotel is “wonderfully cosy” (that’s British for cozy.) Berea is “charming, artsy.” And the food? The Weisenberger Mills cheesy grits are “another must-try delicacy.”

Built in 1909, Boone Tavern Hotel & Restaurant is owned by Berea College and students do much of the work. Named for Daniel Boone, the hotel has housed guests of the college, including the Dalai lama, Henry Ford, President and Mrs. Calvin Coolidge, Eleanor Roosevelt, Maya Angelou and Robert Frost, according to the hotel’s web site.

The Telegraph gave it an 8 out of 10 rating and recommended dinner reservations so you can make sure you get a table.

“Sitting on the veranda with a cocktail, craft beer or one of the many fine Kentucky bourbons is also highly recommended,” the review said.
