Longtime Nicholasville Rd. breakfast spot gone, won’t reopen after closing for COVID

Another longtime Lexington restaurant apparently is gone. And it is looks like the loss will be permanent.

Denny’s on Nicholasville Road has closed.

A sign on the door said it had closed temporarily “due to the unprecedented situation caused by the spread of Coronavirus/COVID-19.”

But now the restaurant, closed since mid-March, has decided not to reopen.

“Their lease was coming up and they decided not to renew,” said Gordy Hoagland, principal broker for White Oak Commercial Real Estate, an arm of Greer Companies, which owns the property.

The sign was coming down Friday and a sign saying the building is for lease was put up on the road.

The Denny’s company had no immediate response to a request for comment.

The chain has removed the location from its website, leaving only the Denny’s on Newtown Pike. The Denny’s location’s Facebook page says “permanently closed.”

The restaurant was built in 1953; it has been a Denny’s for more than 25 years. Before that it apparently had been a Jerry’s.

It’s the latest closure coming just as Lexington restaurants are starting to reopen after the coronavirus shutdown.

Lexington TGI Friday’s closed

TGI Friday’s at Pavilion Way in Hamburg also closed. It was Lexington’s last location of the once-popular restaurant chain.

Signs were taken off the building and the chain’s web site no longer lists a location in Lexington.

TGI Friday’s franchisee Falcons Group Management issued a statement Friday:

“It is with great sadness that we must close our Lexington restaurant as a result of the unprecedented financial burden due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We thank our loyal guests, valued team members, and the TGI Fridays community for their support throughout the years.”

The closing leaves only two TGI Friday’s left in Kentucky, one in Crestview Hills in Northern Kentucky and the other in downtown Louisville.

Other losses in Lexington include Locals’ on National Avenue, which also did not renew its lease, and Nick Ryan’s on Jefferson Street, which is closed and is for sale.
