This Kentucky ice cream shop is on a roll with cool treats for dogs and their owners
The owners of a Morehead ice cream shop are joined by more than a love of frosty treats. They also share a fondness for four-legged friends.
In fact, Angel Pope and Angie Nelson founded Rolled Over Rolled Ice Cream in 2015 after meeting at a veterinary clinic.
The two hit it off and when Pope opened an animal rescue in 2015, Nelson and her late fiance, Phil Rice, came down to volunteer.
At the time, Angie and Phil were hitting up local Kentucky fairs and carnivals with their Snowie Shaved Ice business.
“He (Phil) saw the rolled ice cream at a local county fair and was like, ‘Aww, that’s neat,’” Nelson recalls. “He really enjoyed watching it and eating it.”
Angie and Phil purchased a rolled ice cream trailer but Phil never got the chance to use it. He went in for a liver and kidney transplant and passed away due to complications in 2018.
“I was talking to Angel and said, ‘I have no idea what to do with this rolled ice cream,’” Nelson said.
“When he passed away, she wanted to figure out a way to carry on the food trucks,” Pope said. “She wanted to keep it going in the rolled ice cream but in a way that helped the animals.”
Without much expectation, Pope and Nelson decided to set up the rolled ice cream trailer at Grayson Memory Days to raise money for Pope’s animal rescue.
“It was a huge hit. We were slammed all day,” Pope said.
Nelson added, “We had a really good turnout that year. Basically, we couldn’t keep up with the demand.”
Pope and Nelson began looking into a storefront location, and they opened up Rolled Over Rolled Ice Cream in the 700-square-foot space at 168 E. Main Street in Morehead.
What is rolled ice cream?
Rolled ice cream is ice cream made to order on a freezing cold metal sheet, mixed and chopped with a number of ingredients ranging from fruits, nuts and chocolate chips to cookies, candy and cereal (prices range from $4 to $7 for small and large servings).
After it is flattened and frozen, it is scraped into tiny rolls and served in a cup with whipped cream, a drizzle of chocolate and a cinnamon graham cracker “Scooby Snack.” All of the signature desserts are named after rescue dogs.
Pope said that everything from the intense flavors to watching your dessert get made right in real time to the presentation lends itself to a welcoming and fun atmosphere for employees, patrons and pups.
That’s right: Dogs enjoy this place too.
Dog friendly ice cream shop
“They’ll still call or message, saying, ‘I can bring my dog in?’” Pope said. “I said, ‘Yeah, come on in.’ ”
The Rolled Over Ice Cream shop also caters to dogs with pet-friendly ice cream and dog treats. They also have frosted nuts and soon will have bubble tea on the menu.
Pope and Nelson are eyeing a new larger location for Rolled Over Rolled Ice Cream that would allow for both indoor and outdoor seating.
“I want it to be a place where people can come and have a good time and sit down and enjoy their ice cream and enjoy their family,” Nelson said.
“We’ve had a lot of fun just watching people enjoy what we’re offering,” Pope added.
