New store from popular Lexington ice cream shop: Soft serve as good as Rupp Arena
Kentucky loves soft-serve ice cream (you’ve seen the lines at basketball games in Rupp Arena, right?) and soon there will be a new homegrown option in Lexington.
Toa and Mike Green, owners of the popular local Crank & Boom Ice Cream, announced on Monday they are opening a new concept: BoBi Cones.
BoBi Cones will serve five flavors of soft serve, rotating the varieties of three, and a variety of cones and toppings. It also can be served as a swirl and in a cup.
“It’s not called Crank & Boom because we wanted to do something new and something different,” said Toa Green.
But have no fear, this will still be all ice cream.
“This is going to be your premium 10 percent butter-fat soft-serve,” Green said. Typical fast-food soft serve (assuming the machine is working) is about 4 percent, she said, “a little more on the icy side.”
How does that compare to Rupp Arena’s? Hard to say for sure but commercially available soft-serve mixes generally run in the 4 to 6 percent range.
“This will be a different concept than Crank & Boom but what will be the same is quality products served with a smile, wonderful service and wonderful flavors,” she said.
BoBi, named for their children Bodhi and Bindi, is pronounced Boe-Bee. And it’s expected to open at 3735 Palomar Centre Dr. # 230 in November. It’s the former Weekly Juicery spot near Malone’s and Harry’s in Palomar Centre.
“Mike and I have always loved soft serve ice cream and wanted to bring a concept that would be fun, delicious and a place of joy, just as Crank & Boom has been. We love the Palomar neighborhood and can’t wait to serve the community there with this brand new concept,” said Toa Green. “We are still developing the menu, so it’s all a work in progress.”
She announced the big news live on Instagram, explaining that she and her husband have lot of happy memories and nostalia for the Rupp Arena soft serve.
“How fun is it to have the soft serve shop in the neighborhood?” she said.
The menu Toa Green showed on her Instagram live video showed a potential lineup that included dipped cones, floats and sundaes that included cookies and cream, s’mores, peanut butter cup, caramel candy crunch and more.
