New restaurant alert: Barbecue chain returns to Lexington, is open now
The barbecue is back: Sonny’s BBQ has opened its Lexington location.
The Florida-based regional chain used to have a Lexington restaurant on Red Mile Road but it hasn’t been here in years.
Now, it’s come back and opened a new location Wednesday at 2341 Buena Vista Rd.
That was the former site of a Bob Evans that closed during the pandemic and decided in early 2021 not to reopen. There has been a Bob Evans Restaurant on that site at least since the mid-1980s.
Sonny’s BBQ opened this week after renovating the spot just off of Winchester Road near Hamburg and I-75.
Sonny’s menu includes barbecue, of course, as well as Southern favorites including fried okra and fried pickles.
The signature slow-smoked barbecue includes ribs, pulled or sliced pork, chicken, turkey and brisket. And for dessert, there’s cinnamon sugar doughnut holes, giant chocolate chip cookies and banana pudding.
Sonny’s BBQ also opened a new location in Frankfort in June near the I-64 interchange at 141 Bizzack Blvd. in the former Logan’s Roadhouse and there is one in Nicholasville.
Another location is expected to open in Bowling Green in 2022.
