New Lexington bakery offers magical treats for customers big and small
A new cupcake shop and tearoom is opening on Rosemont Garden in a bakery that looks fit for fairies.
Indeed, kids who come in are encouraged to put on a pair of wings or grab a magic wand and go on a fairy hunt around Olive’s Apron.
Owner Ashley Crossen knew for years exactly what she wanted in a shop.
“I’ve kind of baked all my life ... I’d post pictures on Facebook and my friends and family would say they wanted to buy it,” she said. Around Christmas of 2019 she got a home baker-processor license but with two small boys at home, her business was pretty much pre-orders for holidays.
“I always wanted to do more, I wanted to have a little bakery, I always said I just wanted a little house to have a tea shop,” she said. Then two years ago, she saw it. Every day driving her son to preschool, she’d pass this empty stone building on Rosemont Garden.
With the encouragement of her husband David, she finally called and toured the place.
“It was perfect and now here I am,” she said.
The kid-friendly shop, named for her late great-grandmother, Olive Kenney, will have its grand opening on Sept. 1.
Olive’s Apron will serve a menu of cupcakes, cookies, scones, muffins, brownies and other baked goods, she said. Vegan options also will be available.
She’ll also have a wide variety of teas as well as coffee.
“I try to do seasonal when I can and local. Last weekend I had a blackberry pistachio cupcake and all the blackberries came from Eckert’s Orchard,” she said. “I like to come up with different flavor combos.”
For instance, a menu for pre-order business included lemon curd cupcakes and blueberry cheesecake brownies.
And beginning in October she hopes to rent out her special tea party room for showers, birthday parties and other events. If she can wait that long; fans on social media are already asking about the room.
The look of it, as well as the rest of the bakery, was designed by her friend Carrie Murtha, who runs Rosebud Ranch, a non-profit animal rescue and does design work on the side to help fund it.
“I feel like Lexington needs pretty places,” Crossen said.
The whimsical decor also includes fairies hidden around the rooms and there are wings and wands for small customers to try out.
Eventually she plans to offer afternoon teas with all the trimmings.
Crossen said she will do custom and special orders as well and takes information on her website for a quote.
“I like trying to look at people and figure out what kind of cupcake they would be,” she said.
