Roaches, no sanitizer: Lexington health department closed three local restaurants
In the last month, Lexington Fayette County Health Department has closed three restaurants temporarily.
All three have reopened after fixing the issues that caused them to shut down.
The health department inspects every local food service establishment at least every six months; some restaurants are placed on enhanced regulatory enforcement and receive additional inspections. Restaurants also are inspected if the health department receives credible complaints.
When the health department closes a restaurant, a red sign is placed on the door to notify potential customers that food service has been halted. But the health department does not publicize that restaurants have been closed.
In October, the health department had about 160 restaurants and businesses under enhanced regulatory enforcement. At least eight local establishments were closed between June and October, with one business closed twice.
Between Oct. 11 and Nov 13, three restaurants were closed. Here are details on why.
Winburn Cafe
Winburn Cafe, 1100 Winburn Dr., was closed after an inspection on Oct. 17 that found the presence of live insects, among other violations.
Panda Garden
Panda Garden, 3401 Nicholasville Rd. in the food court in Fayette Mall, was closed after an inspection on Oct. 20 that found roaches (dead and alive) among other violations.
Peach Cobbler Factory
Peach Cobbler Factory, 561 S. Broadway Unit 145, was closed immediately after an inspection on Oct. 31 after the inspector found no sanitizer in use. The restaurant also was cited the next day for removing the closure sign from the door.
