Fire damages longtime Lexington sushi and Japanese hibachi restaurant
Miyako Sushi & Steak House on Richmond Road was damaged by fire Tuesday afternoon.
The Japanese restaurant at 2547 Richmond Rd. sustained “pretty extensive damage to the kitchen,” said Battalion Chief Matt Galati of the Lexington Fire Department.
“It’s not going to be open anytime soon,” he said.
A statement on Miyako’s Facebook page Tuesday night said the restaurant’s management and staff are “devastated” by the fire, but they intend to reopen “as soon as possible.”
“We are beyond grateful that not a single person was injured in this tragedy,” the statement said in part. “Due to the extensive damages, Miyako Sushi & Steakhouse will remain closed until further notice with the fullest intent of reopening.
“This year will mark 25 years of Miyako in Lexington and we intend to return stronger than ever.”
A passerby noticed flames coming out the vents in the roof and called the fire department at 3:23 p.m. No one was inside the restaurant at the time.
Galati said the last person inside had left at 2 p.m., and the restaurant was scheduled to open for dinner at 5 p.m.
When firefighters arrived, Galati said they forced their way into the building and found “heavy fire in the kitchen” that was going up out the vents in the ceiling.
In addition to the fire damage, Galati said there was smoke damage throughout the building.
No one was injured.
Miyako’s owner, Andy Chi, also operates Miyako Poke Bowl on South Broadway and Zundo Izakaya on Tiverton Way off Nicholasville Road, which opened in 2022 and serves a kind of Japanese pub food, the Herald-Leader reported at the time.
