Alan Stein closes Stein Group, returns to his radio roots
After closing Stein Group in November, Lexington businessman Alan Stein has joined Lexington-based LM Communications Broadcast.
Founded by Lynn Martin, LM is Lexington’s only locally owned radio group. It owns six radio stations in Lexington, five in Charleston, W. Va., and two in Charleston, S.C., as well as WBKI in Louisville.
In Lexington, its stations include WBVX FM 92.1, WLXO FM Hank 96.1, WGKS FM KISS 96.9 and WLXG AM 1300, ESPN Sports Radio.
Stein, 66, was named vice president of new business development for LM in mid-January.
The Stein Group consultancy had “a big overhead,” he said.
“As in any small business, if you’ve got more going out than coming in, you’ve got to take a look at it.”
Stein Group’s website said its clients included Alltech, the Catholic Action Center, Community Ventures, Commerce Lexington and Georgetown College.
After closing that business, Stein said, “My question was, what do I want to do, or do I want to do anything. ... I have decades in the radio business, and Lynn Martin and I have been friends for 30 years.”
Stein was part of the group that sold the cluster of stations that now belong to Cumulus in 1998, he said. After that, he founded the Lexington Legends minor league baseball team.
Stein has also been active in education boards, including most recently the Fayette County public schools redistricting committee, and in nonprofits such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass and the Commerce Lexington Board of Directors.
