Backstage, the new outlet store-within-a-store concept is open for business on the third floor of Macy’s at Fayette Mall. There was a soft opening on Aug. 11 for the store, the first in Kentucky. At the grand opening on Saturday the first 200 customers will get a Backstage scratch-off gift card with free balloons, music, and giveaways throughout the day.

We dropped by on Tuesday to find drop-dead gorgeous Gucci platform sandals, originally $1,100 on sale for $499, as well as snack foods and cold soft drinks at the check-out counter à la T.J. Maxx. There were handbags, Yankee Candle jars, and Neutrogena facial towelettes, pet accessories, E.L.F. Cosmetics, and a handsome upholstered chair accented with nail tacks. The chair from Inspired by Bassett was $199.99, marked down from $400.

The store has its own buying team separate from Macy’s and store manager Marilyn DeJesus said that small shipments will arrive daily for a constantly changing array of merchandise. What you see on the floor is it, she said. There’s no back stockroom full of extras. Some items, like the Gucci shoes and children’s toys, you’ll not normally find at a Macy’s. Others brands, such as Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, and Cole Haan are department store staples at 20 to 80 percent off.

Throughout the store, there is an eye to current fashion trends for men and women. Store manager DeJesus pointed out a selection of Fall styles for women, “The Plaid, the houndstooth, the floral. You’ve got to have a pattern this year,” she said.
