Some animals are born with markings that make them stand out, but the sloth bear has something even more unusual: a hairstyle that looks remarkably like a pair of ponytails.

While visiting Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, TikToker Ash (@ashgoestolawschool) spotted a sloth bear named Kartik and immediately noticed his unique 'do. The "ponytails" aren't actually ponytails at all; it's just the way his fur naturally grows, but that hasn't stopped viewers from doing a double-take. His adorable hairstyle has people completely entertained and wondering whether Kartik secretly has his own personal stylist.

Ash made us laugh with her caption: "Baddie bear actually has a nice ring to it though..." and she's not wrong about that. As commenter @Taylor joked, "He just wanted to feel bonita!"

Why Do Sloth Bears Have Such Shaggy Fur?

According to the American Museum of Natural History, there's a good reason for the sloth bear's shaggy fur. As cute as Kartik's "ponytails" may be, they're actually part of a coat that's perfectly designed for survival.

"The sloth bear's (Melursus ursinus) scruffy appearance isn't just for looks. It's for protection!" the museum explains. Because termites make up a major part of their diet, the bear's long fur helps protect it from bites while it raids nests. Sloth bears also have another impressive adaptation: they can completely close their nostrils while feeding to keep insects from crawling up their noses. Their shaggy coats even serve a parenting purpose, giving the cubs something to cling to while riding on their mother's back."

Despite their goofy appearance, sloth bears have a fierce reputation. According to the BBC, they are considered among the most dangerous bears in the world and are known for standing their ground against predators, including tigers. They're not naturally aggressive, but when threatened, they can be formidable opponents. Sloth bears often stand on their hind legs to appear larger and display their long claws as a warning. If a confrontation escalates, even tigers tend to think twice.

And one final fun fact: sloth bears aren't actually related to sloths at all. They earned their name because early observers thought their long claws and unusual teeth resembled those of a sloth.
