Did ‘The Odyssey' Deliver Christopher Nolan's Biggest Opening Day Ever?

Christopher Nolan is the rarest type of movie maker you'll find in 2026. His attention to detail and epic productions have created an audience trust that is unmatched in the industry, and Nolan is often the biggest star of his movies, even over the Academy Award-worthy stars who appear on screen.

His latest picture, The Odyssey, has been one of the summer's most anticipated releases, and audiences have responded in record numbers after the first day in theaters. It earned $51 million domestically, is on track for $120 million domestically after the opening weekend, and $250 million worldwide after the opening weekend.

This is the third-largest domestic opening of Nolan's career behind The Dark Knight at $158.4 million and The Dark Knight Rises at $160.8 million. Considering that those were franchise movies in a superhero genre that always generates hundreds of millions in revenue, this opening weekend for The Odyssey is even more impressive. This film is a standalone that's not carried by comic book lore, only the reputation of Nolan and his actors.

There are tons of star power in this one, such as Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson. The story follows the Greek figure, Odysseus, as he traverses many perils after the Trojan War. It's once again a different genre for Nolan, after his last film Oppenheimer, which focused on the life of the man who created the atomic bomb during World War II.

It's been a slow summer for movies in general. Toy Story 5 was a major box office success, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day should be a huge one for superhero fans and Marvel lovers. The Odyssey will most likely be the most successful and memorable non-sequel film of the summer months, further cementing Nolan as the driver of Hollywood's most talked-about stories.
