‘The Odyssey' on Streaming: What We Know So Far
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, with its unprecedented scale, technical innovations, and $250 million budget, is suitably epic for Homer's 2,700-year old saga. Nolan, a champion of IMAX and its groundbreaking cinematic revolutions, has helped revitalize the theatrical experience, with countless IMAX theaters across the globe booked solid for months following the film's recent release.
It is because of Nolan's dedication to the theatrical experience that The Odyssey will not be met with the same Video on Demand (VOD) release window that many mainstream films are faced with, usually weeks after their initial theatrical release. Recent reports state that Nolan, in collaboration with The Odyssey's production company, Universal, has ensured a deal where the film will have a minimum 100-day theatrical run (per MSN) before its digital release.
With that in mind, The Odyssey likely will arrive on streaming around November 2026 at the earliest, with early 2027 also looking most plausible. Full-price rentals and purchases, often retailing at $24.99, may release slightly earlier, however.
Due to Universal's deal with Peacock, The Odyssey will make its way to its streaming service around 4 months after its initial release - although its theatrical success can easily prolong that. For comparison, Nolan's last film, Oppenheimer, was released on July 21, 2023, and made it to streaming on Peacock in February the following year.
While other major streaming services, such as Amazon Prime Video, are touted for possible streaming rights to The Odyssey in the near future post-Peacock, Universal's deal with Netflix means that the streaming giant will likely add The Odyssey to its catalog in Summer 2027 at the earliest. However, the film's projected popularity with moviegoers, plus any major changes in deals and streaming rights across platforms, can delay this significantly or result in it being scrapped altogether between now and next year.
