Setting Revealed For New ‘Call of Duty' Movie From ‘Yellowstone' Writer

The new Call of Duty movie will officially be set in the "Modern Warfare" universe.

The upcoming Call of Duty movie is from writer Taylor Sheridan, who has a deal with Paramount Pictures. The new film was announced in September 2025, and Paramount has been tight-lipped about any plot details since then.

Call of Duty is a first-person shooter franchise from Activision with multiple settings. The original Call of Duty was set in World War II. "Black Ops" spans different time periods, mainly follows CIA dealings, and includes versions set during the Cold War, future eras, and Zombies editions.

"Modern Warfare" is set closer to the present day and centers on conflicts in the Middle East and with Russia. "Modern Warfare 3" was released in 2023. It features recurring characters like Captain Price, Soap MacTavish, and Ghost, and follows Price and Task Force 141 as they try to defeat Vladimir Makarov. Sheridan will be pulling from this series, though it is unclear what that will entail.

During the "Call of Duty Culture Panel" at Fanatics Fest in New York City, director and co-writer Peter Berg revealed that the film would be set in the "Modern Warfare" universe. The panel was promoting the upcoming release of "Modern Warfare 4," which will be released in October and features a war between North and South Korea.

The release date for the Call of Duty film is currently set for June 30, 2028.

When the film was announced last year, the studio explained that since Sheridan was under a multiyear contract with them, he could write multiple sequels and create a larger Call of Duty universe for film and television.

Sheridan signed a deal with Paramount that will go through 2028. Deadlineannounced last year, however, that Sheridan will leave Paramount once the deal is over. The writer-director has already signed a five-year deal with NBC that will start in 2029.

The Hollywood Reporterreported that the relationship between Sheridan and Paramount was already "rocky" before the deal, despite the fact that Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison made it clear they wanted to keep him around.

Sheridan's shows have been a huge success for the streaming platform. Yellowstone alone spawned four spin-offs. Sheridan is also responsible for creating Mayor of Kingstown, Landman, Lioness, and The Madison. He has also created and produced the reality show The Road along with Blake Shelton and Keith Urban.
