Moms have some of the strongest instincts when it comes to keeping their babies safe. But sometimes, despite her best efforts, a mother needs someone else to step in and help. And that is exactly what happened to this mother sheep in the Irish countryside.

Somehow, two lambs were stuck outside of their fenced pasture. While one could easily slip under the closed gate to rejoin the herd, the other was not able to do so. The frightened lamb began to panic, and thankfully, a passerby helped and safely returned it to its mom. And mama sheep could not have been more grateful.

Stop best walk ever all the sheep surrounding around anxiously watching the lamb panic behind the gate and the way the little lamb ran straight to his mother I actually am not able and she just stood looking at us as if to say thank you cutest cutest moment ever #rescue#sheep#animals#farmanimals#galway

The heartwarming rescue was captured on video and shared by TikTok user @chelseatighexo, with onscreen text that reads, "POV: your boyfriend saves a baby sheep, and the mom says thank you."

In the video, the little lamb frantically ran back and forth, desperately trying to find a way back to its mother. Before long, the little black and white lamb gets its little horns stuck in the bars of the metal gate while attempting to squeeze through.

It's during this tense moment that a man on his walk sees the struggling animal and gently frees it from the gate. Moments later, he can be seen carefully lifting the distressed lamb over the brick wall back to the field with its mom.

Part of the caption describes the sweet reunion: "the way the little lamb ran straight to his mother, and she just stood looking at us as if to say thank you." Before leading her baby away, the mother sheep looks directly at the good Samaritan and lets out a sweet and grateful "baaaa." It's simple, but really all that was needed to show her appreciation.

Do Sheep Really Recognize Acts of Kindness?

While it's impossible to know if the ewe was truly thanking the man for helping her lamb, or just letting out a normal sheep sound, research indicates that they are more intelligent and perceptive than most people realize. According to ScienceDirect, sheep can recognize individual humans and remember previous interactions. So it's quite possible that the mama sheep was able to associate the person with the positive feelings of being reunited with her baby, and the bleat could be a true expression of gratitude.
