The original white clapboard buildings give Roche Harbor Resort a romantic, old-fashioned feel, but the amenities are contemporary and often luxurious. The resort offers history and fun ways to spend a day, from the sculpture park to the pool.

  • Historic option: Hotel de Haro, dating to 1886, with strollable flower gardens out front
  • Modern options: Hotel rooms, suites, historic cottages, vacation homes and condos

SheBuysTravel Tip:Washington State Ferries fill up fast in summer, especially on holiday weekends. Book your ferry reservation as soon as you book your lodging. Walk-on passengers have more flexibility, but if you’re bringing a car, reserve early.

Jetted tubs for two, king-sized beds and fireplaces make the 24 guest rooms here ideal for a romantic getaway. Dine downstairs, then relax in Adirondack chairs overlooking the marina.

Room amenities:

  • Electric kettle and Harney & Sons teas
  • Freshly ground coffee from San Juan Island Coffee Company
  • Mini refrigerator
  • L’Occitane bath products
  • San Juan Island Serenity kit (bath fizz, bath salts, eye patches, silk sleep mask)
  • Plush bathrobes

SheBuysTravel Tip:Ask about the San Juan Island Serenity kit when booking. It makes a lovely anniversary or birthday surprise. Pair it with a jetted tub soak and a bottle of local wine for the ultimate in-room date night.

The Adirondack chairs at the water’s edge at Snug Harbor Resort and Marina offer couples a relaxing spot to savor a cup of coffee and watch the morning light play on Mitchell Bay. Snug Harbor is that kind of place - quiet, private and completely unhurried.

  • Suites and cabins tucked into the woods or along the waterfront
  • Kitchenettes in every cabin, great for easy breakfasts and late-night snacks
  • Communal fire pit on the waterfront

SheBuysTravel Tip:Stock up on groceries in Friday Harbor before heading to Snug Harbor. The kitchenettes make quick breakfasts easy, and the drive back to town for forgotten items can eat into precious island time.

Nestled on the edge of Friday Harbor, Juniper Lane Guest House feels like a country escape. Every room has warm wood tones, vibrant colors and its own personality.

Why couples love it:

  • Watch deer in the pastures or eagles from the backyard
  • Fire up the grill and settle in for a quiet evening
  • Book the private cabin for extra seclusion

SheBuysTravel Tip:For the most privacy, book the standalone cabin rather than a guest room. It’s the closest thing to having your own little island retreat and the eagle nest in the backyard is a bonus you won’t find anywhere else.

Discovery Inn, San Juan Island

Discovery Inn surprised me, in the best possible way. The immaculate rooms, attention to detail and amenities make it a great place for couples to relax.

Discovery Inn punches well above its price point, and the park-like grounds make it feel far removed from the ferry hustle just down the road.

The details that stand out:

  • Robes and slippers
  • Hypoallergenic wool carpeting
  • Welcome chocolates

Featured amenities:

  • Seasonal outdoor hot tub
  • Outdoor seating areas
  • Lawn games
  • Barbecues
  • Mini refrigerators and microwaves

Perched on a bluff with unobstructed views of Ship Bay, this 11-room inn near East Sound Village provides a peaceful setting for a romantic getaway. The Adirondack chairs along the cliff make a great place for relaxing in the evening with a glass of wine.

What makes it special:

  • Floral quilts, gas faux wood stove and country-style furnishings
  • Balconies or patios with water views
  • Heirloom apple, pear and plum trees on the original 1860s homestead

Outlook Inn, Orcas Island

The Outlook Inn offers couples a luxury waterfront stay on Orcas Island, with sweeping views of Fishing Bay. I could spend all morning admiring the views of the bay. It's an easy walk to Eastsound’s eateries and boutiques.

Why it’s ideal for couples:

  • Select rooms with fireplaces and private balconies
  • Waterfront rooms with bay views
  • On-site New Leaf Cafe for dinner
  • Walk to shops and restaurants

Orcas Hotel, Orcas Island

Stepping off the ferry, the sight of the Orcas Hotel’s steep roof and gleaming white wraparound porch is an instant signal that life moves a little slower here. The porch offers a great spot to watch the ferry bustle, while staying well above it (literally).

  • Built in 1904, perched on the hill above the ferry landing
  • Ten light and bright rooms, each appointed with antiques
  • First-floor cafe serving breakfast, lunch and dinner

SheBuysTravel Tip:The Orcas Hotel sits directly at the ferry landing, which makes it incredibly convenient, but ferry traffic can be noisy during peak arrivals. If you’re a light sleeper, request a room facing away from the dock.

Lopez Farm Cottages & Tent Camping, Lopez Island

Located amid fields and forest on pastoral Lopez Island, Lopez Farm Cottages & Camping offers a dreamy escape where the pace slows down, and the only agenda is deciding between a nap and a sunset stroll. As a cat lover, the two farm cats felt like a bonus.

Stay options:

  • Airy glamping tents
  • Cozy cottages with WiFi
  • Tent sites under the stars

Why couples love it:

  • Private cabins surrounded by nature
  • Birdsong, fresh air and genuine quiet
  • A true off-the-grid feel

SheBuysTravel Tip:Lopez Island is the most low-key of the three main islands, so bring everything you need before you arrive. Stock up on wine, snacks and groceries in Anacortes or Friday Harbor and settle in for a true slow-travel experience.

Edenwild Boutique Inn, Lopez Island

Right in Lopez Village, Edenwild Boutique Inn puts you steps from coffee shops, restaurants and the Saturday farmers market. I especially liked the wrap-around porch and comfortable lounge, both designed for relaxing.

Highlights:

  • Wisteria-draped pergola (stunning in spring)
  • Rocking chairs on the porch
  • Cozy lounge with fireplace
  • Garden cottages for extra privacy

SheBuysTravel Tip:If you’re visiting in spring, time your stay to catch the wisteria in bloom. It’s one of the most Instagram-worthy moments in the San Juans, and the Saturday Lopez Village Farmers Market is worth building your itinerary around.

  • Getting There: The Washington State Ferry system takes visitors from Anacortes to Friday Harbor, Eastsound Village and Lopez Island. You'll need a reservation for the car, and a ticket for everyone but the driver.
  • When to Go: For the best weather and recreation options, visit May-September.
  • What to Pack: A waterproof windbreaker for cool breezes and evenings, good walking shoes and layered clothing.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Places to Stay in the San Juan Islands

Which San Juan Island Is Best for a Romantic Couples Getaway?

Each island has its own vibe. San Juan Island offers the most variety of entertainment, with shopping, historical sites, farms and hikes. I'm drawn to the cute shops and historical parks. If you love art, food and hiking, head for Orcas Island. It's the most mountainous. Eastsound village offers farm-to-table restaurants, shopping and stunning water views. It's a foodie favorite. Lopez Island offers an escape to the countryside. It's mostly rural, with beaches, hiking and plenty of opportunities to unplug. I could have stayed all day at some of the waterfront parks.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the San Juan Islands?

Summer (June-August) offers the warmest weather and best wildlife viewing, but you'll also have the most crowds. You'll want to book hotels and excursions as soon as you can. I prefer the shoulder seasons, in May and September. We've found fewer crowds, lower rates and good weather in those months. In May, the roadside wildflowers bloom.

Do I Need a Car in the San Juan Islands?

It depends on what kind of trip you want, and where you're going. The Jolly Trolley on San Juan Island runs a loop that visits Friday Harbor, Roche Harbor and the highlights around the island. Bicycling or renting a moped "car" from Susie's Mopeds is also an option.

If you're not an avid bicyclist and plan to leave the Eastsound Village on Orcas, or go anywhere on Lopez, then you'll want a car.

How Do I Get to the San Juan Islands?

To reach the islands, we rode the Washington State Ferries from Anacortes to San Juan Island. The ferries also visit Orcas and Lopez Islands. We've also flown to the islands on Kenmore Air for a car-free vacation. The airline provides seaplane service from Seattle.

What Is the Best Place to Stay in the San Juan Islands for Couples?

It depends on what you’re after. For luxury and amenities, Friday Harbor House, Roche Harbor Resort and Outlook Inn offer a romantic, plush experience. Orcas Hotel, Roche Harbor Resort and Edenwild Boutique Inn are my favorites for historical charm. If you're looking for nature and seclusion, I'd choose Lopez Farm Cottages & Camping, Juniper Lane Guest House or Snug Harbor Resort and Marina. They all have cabins and nature galore.
