Fox 56 names new sports director, a familiar face in its sports coverage
Fox 56 has promoted sports reporter Colby Wilson to the position of sports director, replacing Michael Epps, who left WDKY at the end of July.
Monte Costes, FOX 56 vice president and general manager, called Wilson a “natural leader and a rising star in this industry” and praised her “energy, work ethic and connection with viewers.”
“Colby is taking the reins at a really exciting time,” Fox 56 News Director Mark Glover said in a news release. “She’s already played a key role in launching our Around the Pitch weekly show focused on Lexington Sporting Club and will now help lead our first high school football broadcasts during the Home Team Showcase at Lexington Christian Academy on Aug. 22.”
The television station said its sports department “will soon be expanding further, with additional announcements to follow.”
Wilson has been with Fox 56 since December 2023. She graduated from the University of Portland, where she was a Division I soccer player, in May 2023.
She previously worked at KOIN-TV in Portland as an on-air sports personality and production assistant.
Wilson’s bio on the WDKY website says she “comes from a sports family.” It states that her dad “has been a collegiate and NFL coach for 28 years,” and “her brother played football in college and the NFL but is now a coach.”
Her father is Chris Wilson, a former Philadelphia Eagles defensive line coach who has also held positions at a number of universities and is currently coaching in the United Football League, Larry Vaught reported on YourSportsEdge.com.
“I’m incredibly excited to step into this new role here at FOX 56,” Wilson said in the release. “From the moment I arrived in the Bluegrass two years ago, it’s been clear how much sports mean to this state. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to continue sharing the stories of the athletes and coaches who inspire this community, and I’m especially thankful to be doing it alongside such a talented team that’s played a key role in my growth.”
Epps did not announce his plans for the future when he left the station.
“I have some dreams to chase in my career, and it’s time for me to go take this next step, wherever it might be. Hoping that I figure that out here soon,” he said in his final broadcast at WDKY.
“It’s been amazing,” he said. “I’m going to miss it.”
