122 people will lose jobs when FedEx permanently closes Lexington plant in March
Federal Express Corp. has said it will permanently close its Lexington facility on Mercer Road effective March 3, eliminating the jobs of 122 people.
The Memphis-based shipping and logistics company announced the closing Jan. 3 in a notice filed with Kentucky officials under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN Act.
Most of those affected work as couriers.
“Employees whose positions are eliminated will be provided the options to consider transfer to new locations, severance, or a leave of absence during which they may pursue other positions with FedEx,” the company said in its announcement.
The company said the closing is “due to business reorganization.”
FedEx said in an emailed statement that it “regularly evaluates its network and makes adjustments to align with the evolving needs of the business” and that “certain team members will be offered opportunities at other FedEx locations.”
“Decisions of this nature are the result of much thought and consideration for maintaining the high level of service expected from our customers and other needs of our business,” the statement reads. “Affected team members were notified several months before any changes occur and receive assistance with finding other employment opportunities within the company, including additional support options like relocation assistance or severance where applicable.”
In the past few months, there have been waves of announcements from FedEx about job cuts across the country, including North Carolina, Arkansas and Tennessee. Parts of Europe also have been targeted.
In December, yahoo/finance published a story outlining the company’s reengineered integration of its ground express and service units.
The company wants to save $6 billion by 2027 by consolidating FedEx’s delivery network with fewer routes and stations while also integrating its ground, express and services units.
